Seedling is based on the idea that saving for a child is easier when everyone helps. When you sign up for Seedling, you can then apply to open a Custodial Savings Account online. When you open a SeedlingCustodial Savings Account, you’re able to invite anyone - friends, family, neighbors - to save for your child.
A custodial savings account is a financial account that an adult, parent or custodian opens and maintains on behalf of a child or minor. When the child/minor reaches legal age, the account is transferred to them.
You can find out how to view your account statements on the Documents page in your Seedling Dashboard. Monthly statements will also be mailed to the address listed on your account for each of your Seedling Custodial Savings Accounts.

Yes, anyone may apply to open a Seedling Custodial Savings Account for a child/minor. However, the individual seeking to open the account will need accurate personal information, such as the child’s name, date of birth, address, and social security number.
To get started, visit the Seedling Savings account opening page. Opening a Seedling Custodial Savings Account is similar to opening a traditional banking account: We will ask for personal and financial information about you and the child/minor. To speed up your account application, it helps to have the following information about the child/minor handy: his/her name, date of birth, address and social security number.
The interest rate on the Seedling Custodial Savings Account varies depending the state in which it is opened. When you visit the Seedling Savings website, you will see the Interest Rate that is available for your state of residence.
There is no minimum deposit needed to open an Seedling Custodial Savings Account and there is no fee as long as you maintain an average monthly balance of $500. If an average monthly balance is below $500, then there is a fee of $4.50 per month.
Once your Seedling Custodial Savings Account is approved, you can deposit funds using any bank debit card. We are actively working on adding more payment methods.
As a custodian, the deposit limit depends on how you’re contributing to your account. Currently we offer contribution through Debit Card. For debit card, you can make contributions that total up to $1,000 every 30-days. There may be tax consequences associated with deposits into a Seedling Custodial Savings Account. Please consult with a tax or financial professional regarding these potential consequences.

A Gifter/Contributor is anyone, such as a friend, a family member or a coworker, who contributes to a child/minor’s Seedling Custodial Savings Account.
Right now you can only contribute to the child/minor’s Seedling Custodial Savings Account using a debit card. We are working to add more payment methods in the future.
The contribution limit is $1,000 to each Seedling Custodial Savings Account.
A Gifter/Contributor will only see the child/minor’s name, picture if included, and the personal message. As a custodian, you will have a chance to set up the contribution request page, called the “Gifting page,” and you can change your message and the child/minor’s photo at any time.
No – strangers won’t be able to find this page using search engines such as Google. All pages are private and only the people with the link can access it.
It’s completely up to you! Research has told us that many people request gifts for birthdays, major holidays and milestones such as the year-end school report card.
All contributions will be deposited directly into the child/minor’s Seedling Custodial Savings Account.
You will receive a confirmation email once the funds are deposited.
Once the funds are processed, the contributor will receive a confirmation email and certificate. They can print out the certificate to mail or give to the child/minor.
It’s easy. A Gifter/Contributor completes the payment steps, writes a note and then sends the contribution. The funds are deposited in the child/minor’s Seedling Custodial Savings Account and we notify the account owner by email.
You can use a debit card to make a contribution. We are working to add more payment methods in the future.
